Get transcriptions in another language

Speakly transcribes what you say, in the language you say it. That is one setting, not two: you tell it which language you speak, and it types that language. Translating into a different language is a separate job, done afterwards by post-processing — and you set it up per app with a custom prompt.

The language you speak

  1. Open Settings → General.
  2. Under Language, the current choice is highlighted in the list.
  3. Click Change.
  4. Pick your language from the grid, or use Search the language you speak....
Auto-detect works, but picking is better
Auto-detect guesses the language afresh on every recording, and short or noisy clips are where it gets it wrong. If you always speak the same language, choosing it removes the guess and makes transcription measurably more accurate. Keep Auto-detect only if you genuinely switch languages between recordings.

Getting output in another language

Use a custom prompt. Each one carries its own output language (sidebar → Custom Prompts → New Prompt → Type in which language?), and while that prompt is active, post-processing writes the result in that language, translating as needed. Leave it on Same as spoken for a prompt that should not change the language. Because a prompt can be bound to specific apps, this is how you get, say, English in Slack while dictating in Portuguese everywhere else.

Translation needs post-processing
The prompt's language is applied by the LLM step, so it only takes effect once a provider is set up in Settings → Post-Processing — a local model or an API key. Without one, the transcription is typed in the language you spoke.

How many languages

99 — the complete set of languages OpenAI Whisper supports. Every one of them can be set as the language you speak, and as a custom prompt's output language.

Where else the language matters

  • Style examples are generated in the language you speak, so the hint sent to the transcription model matches what it is about to hear.
